Colorado has joined the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact, which permits out-of-state professionals to fast-track licensing within the state. New York
New York’s parity law requires insurers to cover telemedicine the same as in-person, with expanded Medicaid coverage and reimbursement. New York law authorizes live video telemedicine for medically necessary services for patients in certain locations, including mental health facilities, doctors’ offices, hospitals, hospice care, schools, child daycare, adult care facilities, and in the patient’s home. Authorized telemedicine practitioners include psychiatrists, psychologists and psychiatric nurse practitioners, among others. Legislation has been introduced in the New York Assembly to join the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact.
Arizona
Arizona is a member of the Interstate compact, making it easier for telemedicine providers to get licensed in the state. A new law effective for 2021 expands the definition of telemedicine to include asynchronous store-and-forward technologies and remote patient monitoring technologies. The law also moves telemedicine in Arizona to full parity with in-person services. The state has a narrow list of the types of healthcare providers who can provide telemedicine services, but this list includes clinical psychologists, licensed clinical social workers, licensed marriage and family therapists, and licensed professional counselors, among others.
Nevada
Nevada passed its parity law in 2015 and allows for telemedicine to be practiced (with Medicaid reimbursement) statewide. Nevada does not have any restrictions on the types of healthcare providers who can practice telemedicine, and the state no longer requires a telepresenter to be present on-site with the patient. Nevada is a compact state, providing a simpler pathway to licensure for doctors licensed in another participating state.
